Rose Parade Cha Cha

for Concert Band

Looking for something spirited and fun for your intermediate concert band? Here it is a piece originally composed for the Alhambra Unified School District Band's appearance in the 2009 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade and revised and expanded for concert band. As one of the directors of the AUSD Band, I wrote to amuse the young musicians with a light piece full of rhythmic verve and a moment in the sunshine for each instrument section.

This concert band version adds double reeds and concert percussion as well as a minor, semi-gothic "trio" section and a brass chorale circling back to the original theme. Key to the expressiveness of the piece is the Latin flavor of the syncopated rhythmic motifs and the inclusion of Latin percussion: claves, g├╝iro, maracas, and conga drum.

Rose Parade Cha Cha was performed by the Los Angeles Symphonic Winds under the direction of Stephen Piazza at a NACUSA-LA sponsored concert on July 6, 2019. Thanks to the city of Culver City for a supporting grant for this performance and its recording.
