Piano Postcards

Piano Postcards cover

By Carla K. Bartlett

Dear new friend,

Oh, the joy of receiving a colorful postcard in the mail ! Short, capturing the

essence of a message much like a poem, the postcard at its core is an

expression of caring, brief but heartfelt.

What would a "musical postcard" sound like? That depends on who is writing

it, and for whom it is intended. What if the granddaughter of the famous French

painter Claude Monet wrote a postcard to her grandfather, thanking him for the

lovely Sunday afternoon they had shared in his now legendary garden at Giverny?

Dear Grandpa Claude tries to capture the sentiment. What would an elderly aunt write to her beloved niece after seeing a little girl about the same age begging in the snow? Dear Niece is my imagined result. What if your only brother was far away, fighting a war you didn't understand? You might write a postcard like Dear Uncle Sam.

I'll bet you can write your own musical postcard. Imagine a situation or a setting and put yourself in the role of the central person, then listen. What would that person's fears and hopes "sound like"? How could you express those feelings, that mood, in music? Try it-write a musical postcard of your own!

Here are some of mine.

Love, Carla

Dear Little Brother,

Being on my own at college is great,

but I miss you. I'll be coming home at spring

break –– how about a bike ride?

Love, Lala

Mon Ami, Chopin,

It's raining, a lonely Paris afternoon. In my

imagination I see you at your piano,

another evocative nocturne unfolding on

your manuscript paper. Bring it to Sunday's

salon.

Until then, George

Dear Rock Star,

We're all going to miss you. Why did you

have to go? I wanted to be just like you.

Now I donlt know.

Your fan, Tye

Dear Mr. or Ms. Chopsticks,

Yours is one of my favorite songs to play, but

maybe it's time to change it up a bit. Want to

tango?

Respectfully, A new piano student

My Dear Niece,

I hope you are snug and warm this New

Year's Eve, anticipating tomorrow's

celebration with its lovely roast goose. I

saw a girl about your age today, selling

matches in the snow. So sad.

All my love, Auntie Kate

Dear Grandpa Claude,

Sunday supper in your garden was

wonderful. My favorite things were the

irises in bloom and the chocolate cake for

dessert. Mama says we can come again next

week.

Your loving granddaughter

Dear Freak,

I just saw your movie, dude. Even though

your hands look like a Swiss Army knife, I

still think you're cool. Please write back

(if you can).

Your friend, Jason

Dear Best Friend,

It's another Basketball Friday, the home

game against Aloma, and you're not here,

sitting next to me on these hard bleachers.

Has your mom talked about moving back?

Still hoping.

And still your best friend, Kris

Dear NASA,

I'm writing a report on space stations.

Please send me all the information you

have. I am in third grade. When I grow up

I am going to be an astronaut and live in

outer space.

Yours truly, Page

Please, Uncle Sam (Bring Him Home)

I know you need Ryan to fight in the war.

But it's been so long. And he is my only

brother. Can't you please bring him home?

We miss him awful bad.

Sincerely, Lucy
